Honestly with the henchman hero setup of guild wars. Anything can solo play 99% of the content the other 1% being elite areas with no henchmen which pretty much require at least a second person to complete.
Play what looks good to you. Read the descriptions and see what sounds appealing. If you have a thing for dead people go with necromancer if you like making things espload go with ele. If you like to make things espload while a frontline role warrior and bring a bunch of frontline buffs on your heros.
The only thing thats kinda akward to solo with is monk but run a smiting build and you'll be fine.

Make an assassin. perma sins basically rule the high end areas of this game and are the best class for soloing and farming. ps everbody hates them and calls em god mode but truth is u need a bit more comon sense and focus to play a sin.

I still say Assassin. My main character is an assassin.
Assassins are extremely deadly in melee and are very good for farming/running high-end areas. You can also make a huge load of money with them too. They posses one of the best farming skills in the game - Shadow Form.
My 2nd main is a warrior. I like assassins the best because they are ninjas and got daggers and kill things quickly. The only drawback about sins is that they can take a lot of damage but with decent heroes your sin should never die.

If you have all the games, then you have access to heroes at least. Henchmen as well. They are both computer controlled help basically. This way you don't have to spend time looking for other players and can go out adventuring when you want to.
But as for soloing without Heroes or Henchmen, I'd suggest Assassin or Ritualist. Assassins like everyone has said, are great farmers. Pretty much anything that can be farmed, can be farmed by an Assassin. Ritualist on the other hand, have a plethora of spirits at their disposal. Basically your own mini army. They are good for soloing most stuff, but not everything.

Either Assassin or Wamo. But since you get henchman and heroes I doesn't matter all that much. If you have a good build that you use wright you can pretty much solo the game on any proffesion.

Don't let anyone dissuade you, necromancer pride! As always, I'll state that the appeal is infinite energy for maximum abuse when you collect the correct skills. You can play various roles as a necromancer, as a supporter as a damage dealer, hexer and of course a minion master which is one of the more important roles as it does damage and acts as a damage buffer.

As noted, unlike other games in Guild Wars you can replace humans with an AI entourage so your class doesn't matter much. I would suggest avoiding the healer roles, as the AI likes to follow on your targets, and sitting back and healing allies means you aren't easily providing targets. Even a healing class like monk has some damage options though, and certainly the next healing class (ritualist) has even more.

Guild Wars is a group game, you either play with AI or people. The solo activities are mostly farming for items/gold/titles.

I've only just started playing GW about a week or two ago, and like you bought all the chapters and was struggling with where to begin.
I've ended up playing a Warrior/Ranger and started with Prophecies (the original), and so far have been very pleased. Warrior is a good prof to start out with, and by playing Prophecies first the rest of the game/world will make a little more sense and be easier to follow.

Play all of them a little bit at the same time lol, you can travel to different continents quite fast when you start off in cantha or elonia, not so much in tyria, but tyria is long by default. Yet I am one of those who happen to like the story in Tyria. I think dabbling in the various campaigns would be the best gameplay wise as well as that would be best for collecting a wide variety of skills. The skill collection would make your heroes function much better.

if you want the know-how of the game i suggest prophocies. its the longest of the 3, and gives u the most time going through and learnign the basics
if u want a fast experience go for cantha. personally one of the nicer campigns difficulty wise but it can be a bit fast pace for begginers(its by far my favorite)
and then their is elonia. this one is a bit inbetween the 2 others length wise, but once you get near the end it really essentially spikes greatly in difficulty. so i would suggest doing that after the other 2.
the best way to go in my opinion is to go make a cahracter in factions, then go through that campign till kaineing center, switch over to nightfall and pick up some heros then head back to cantha with your heros(if u have good skills for them) and beat cnatha, then prophocies then NF. and anywhere inbetween ur first campign beaten and nF i'd try eye of the north for soem more heros and practice.

1st solo toon - i prefer ranger, use the henchmen/hero wars as a meatshield while you shoot down foes
Cantha (factions) is best way to start - faster pace, but like someone else suggested once you get to kaineng go to elona (nightfalls) to pick up some heroes (personally i grab the first 3 heroes for EOTN since they are level 20 and don't need to be leveled)

Can you get heros by starting in prophecies? Ideally I'd like to play prophecies first, but with heroes to round out my party.

You can get all the heroes regardless of which campaign you start in. Starting in different campaigns makes small differences in the way you acquire the first few heroes and the level they start at, but otherwise there's no difference. You won't need heroes for Prophecies, because it wasn't designed with them in mind (so it's easy), and Prophecies is fairly easy nowadays anyway. The benefit of having heroes over henchmen isn't significant until you've got a lot of skills unlocked and have the expertise to use them well anyway.

Next Question - can i use the same character through all the campaigns? Or will that not make sense because I'll be starting at level 20 in a level 1 starting area?

You can use the same character through all the content, but the events that occur in the starter areas (level 1-19) take place concurrently, so if you start in one campaign and jump across to another, you'll be able to do the content but will jump in a little bit of the way through. Foreign characters are not able to do side quests previous to their point of arrival and do not gain rewards for doing the missions.

Is that a significant issue? Are the 1-19 starter level side missions worth creating a new char for?
